btw: Oil hit a record closing today of $110.02 per barrel.
If I recall it got up to about $30/barrel before falling. It is now somewhere in the neighborhood of $109/barrel..

Wifeofavetposer: because the oil was already making it on to the market at submarket prices via oil for food, there has been no net increase in supply as a result of whatever you consider the US action in Iraq (liberation, illegal war, whatever). No increase in supply means no decrease in price all others things remaining equal. In actuality though all other things have not remained equal. The price has risen because of a lot things including but not limited to:


the decline of the dollar (opec sells oil in US dollars)


Iraq oil output has actually decreased as a result of US action


Demand for oil has risen significantly due to increased economic activity expecially in asia


Instability in the middle east - some would suggest that this instability was at least in part brought on by US actions in Iraq - that is another discussion. Certainly some of the instability is brought on by the machinations of Iran's president and probably some by shaky political situations in many countries in the region.
How much did it cost in 1979 and 1980 compared to the


value of the dollar then as to now? And we were not in a


battle against terrorist at the time. And if you want to go back to 1974 the price of gas doubled in a few week!

Answer me this. If we invaded Iraq for their oil and we are stealing it why has this not depressed prices?
