I went for an oil change today and they said I should have a fuel injection and emission. Is this necessary?

I have 20k miles on my car. They said it should be done at 12k miles. These places are always trying to upsell, so I'm leery of doing anything, but is this a necessary job? What will happen to my car if I keep saying I'm not interested and avoid doing it. Please advise. Thanks.I went for an oil change today and they said I should have a fuel injection and emission. Is this necessary?
Most cars go for well over 100k miles without fuel injector service and still get decent gas mileage. Not having this service done will not harm your vehicle and I would not do it unless it has been identified that the fuel injectors are not working properly.

Examples:

96 Saturn 224k miles injectors never serviced 33mpg

98 Malibu 316k miles injectors never serviced 24mpg

91 Geo 297k miles injectors never serviced 30mpg (this was before i sold it 5 years ago)I went for an oil change today and they said I should have a fuel injection and emission. Is this necessary?
I agree with the first post. I have solved many engine performance problems with pressurized fuel injection cleanings at the rails. I performed this service yesterday on a misfiring 03 Ford Explorer Sport Trac and she said the power is back and the misfiring is gone. This vehicle had 116K miles though and that was the first time the service was performed.

Although, I think 20K miles is a bit soon to have this service performed. I guess it is better than waiting until it becomes a problem. Toyota, Mercedes, Nissan and few others recommend and perform them at certain service intervals.

It also depends on how the car is driven. A person that lives on the highway may not ever experience a problem, but a stop and go or around the corner to the store use may experience problems. Some get away with not performing alot of services, but many are no so fortunate.
Well, it's a toss up. Yes, they are trying to get another sell, but if you do that on a regular basis, you fuel system won't get gummed up as easily. Now, this doesn't mean not replacing the fuel filter or anything like that, but it is a better way to help keep injectors clean. It would also depend on how much it is. If it's like 25 or 30 bucks and they actually connect a device to your engine, go for it. If they just dump a bottle of fuel additive in there, don't.

What will happen to your car is the deposits in your engine will build up, just like any bottle of cleaner will tell you. You don't clean this crap off, your fuel mileage will start to suck. If it were me, I would buy a bottle of Sea Foam, found at any NAPA or any other large chain store, and add that. Do that for the first couple of tanks of gas.
This is really important mate .. i recently had the same problem .. don't know whether to leave it for a fuel injection and oil change and all those things or not .. finally i went with it .. man i was really happy after that .. my car was really smooth after that .. was really happy with the performance .. i suggest that u leave it ..
It helps but you don't need to do it as often as they want you to.

About every 3 years or 36k miles is all you need. You could even strech this to 60k miles and be fine. Many people never have this done and don't have any problems.

As far as it saving you gas, yes it can. But you won't save enough to pay for the service so you won't come out ahead.
What KIND of car is this???? If you are using a ';top tier'; fuel, you shouldn't need this. (read about on web.) THe best thing to do is to use ONLY a synthetic oil. It reduces emissions and improves power and prolongs engine life, since it cleans while you drive and prevents sludge formation. Good luck!!
josh has it right ! those garages are always trying to get all the money off of you they can. as long as you keep the injectors clean you don,t need their services. just throw a bottle of good injector cleaner in your tank about a couple of months and you will be fine.
the owners manual says when and what to have serviced , i would not get any service unless it specifies it in the manual.

your car is probably in fine shape with 20,000 miles on it and i doubt you 'have' to have the service
it not really nessasary, if anything just go to an auto parts store and get fuel injector cleaner, but you dont need it. it may help the car run a little bit better, but its not worth the money
Normally you do not need any extra services that are not listed in the manufacturer's service manual.
Fuel injection services help a lot! Get it done to keep up the gas mileage.
