No. Chevron wouldn't hold off announcing this for anything as trivial as politics. Even speculation that this is a significant find can increase the value of the company dramatically, they are unlikely to sit on that type of money without exploiting it.

ABSOLUTELY!!!! Even IF it WERE actually true. The question should be: Can we trust out current [U.S.] administration to get prices down considering the Bush Family owns the lions share of EXXON/MOBILE stock?
No they have known that oil is there for years but Florida Natural resource people have kept oil drilling in the gulf away from Florida.


One oil spill could decimate the Florida everglades the beaches and Florida tourism.


The Chinese have been buying oil drilling rights in the area and have been making oil alliances around the globe.


I would not fear these alliances though because oil is traded on the global market and if they setup an alliance to buy oil from say Venezuela ...that leaves more oil available on the global market and it would cause prices to drop.





Sorry no political plot here just a win over natural resource groups and another nail in our planets coffin...see there is a price for everthing....if prices go up, drive less and conserve...or your planet and enviroment will take the hit.

If an announcement like that influences the vote of the American people than they need to have their heads examined.
Listen people, there is more oil in our back yard than the law should allow. The problem is, the people of California and Florida don't want off shore oil drilling. The environmentalists don't want drilling in Alaska.





Why they cant drill 50 miles off the coasts, where people on shore cant see the oil platforms, it wouldn't hurt a thing. We are tied to foreign oil because of the above two states and your friendly tree huggers.





They have been producing oil and gas in the Gulf of Mexico for over 50 years and contrary to the environmentalists claim of a dead spot where there is no fish, people travel each and every weekend out as far as 100 miles to fish around platforms because that is where the fish are. Imagine that, you wont hear that on the evening news.





If they would allow drilling and give tax breaks to refineries for upgrades and expansions, so they can refine more oil to gas, we would be back down to around a buck to a buck fifty a gallon in short order.





As long as we have to pay what OPEC wants to charge, it will stay way up there.
it's ashame we should stop using oil and find better ways to generate power...

Well, if it keeps the costs coming down (very conveniently near election time as well) then it's good by me. Doesn't mean I'm going to vote Rep though, or Dem for that matter.
